HMD and Nokia today announced the brand new Nokia 6.1 Plus and 5.1 Plus for Malaysian market. Both the 6.1 Plus and 5.1 Plus are additions to the current Nokia 6.1 and 5.1.
The Nokia 6.1 Plus was launched in China back in August 2018 as the Nokia X6, and yes, they’re reused the name from the X6 that was launched back in 2009 as one of Nokia’s first Symbian smart devices. The Nokia 5.1 Plus was launched back in July 2018, and it was known as the X5 in China.
Both the Nokia 6.1 Plus and 5.1 Plus features all new design, with a strong aluminium frame sandwiched between two piece of glass – a complete break from Nokia’s usual unibody design. Both devices do share pretty similar design and dimensions, and for most people, it can be hard to tell them apart.
The Nokia 6.1 Plus is positioned in the mid-range smartphone market, and features some improvements over the regular Nokia 6.1. The display is now comes with a notch, measuring at 5.8-inches instead of 5.5-inches, with a FHD+ resolution (1080 X 2280) It also features a different overall design compared to the 6.1, along with a 20-gram weight shed. There’s an option for storage expansion via the Hybrid SIM slot. It does have dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0. All of these are powered by a 3060mAh battery.
As for the 5.1 Plus, it’s targeted towards the budget market. It has the same 5.8-inch display, but now with 720p resolution. The notch is larger than the what’s on the 6.1 Plus. The rear cameras are a 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel combo, and there’s an 8-megapixel sensor for the front.
The budget-oriented Nokia 5.1 Plus is now powered by MTK’s Helio P60 Octa-core processor, and will be paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. While it does have dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2 is the only option on board. It does share the same battery capacity with the Nokia 6.1 Plus.
Both the Nokia 6.1 Plus and 5.1 Plus are shipped with Android 8.1, with Android One certification. This means a clutter-free, vanilla Android experience. You’ll also be getting fast Android updates, along with monthly security patches directly from Google. Both are upgradable to Android 9.0 Pie in the near future, and Nokia promises up to 3 years of support for both devices. Nokia is also quite proud of the fact that the 6.1 Plus and 5.1 Plus receive Google’s Android device enterprise certification.
