Unboxing

Like most other premium devices, the Zenfone 5z comes in a blue box, with gold writings and sketches of the device. The entire outer shell of the packaging looks clean. The box that is immediately present once the top cover is off contains the documentations, a SIM tray removal too land a clear soft case, and the phone is right below it. The rest of the packaging contains the usual bits – a USB wall adapter, a USB-C cable and a pair of earphones.

First Impressions

At first glance, the Zenfone 5z immediately gives us a rather good impression. Even though the basic layout might make it look like a device from other brand, but ASUS doesn’t forget the elements that makes their device stand out. Its size is close to perfect, and can be comfortably held in one’s hand, even though it’s going to be hard to operate it single-handedly. The Zenfone 5z do feel premium too, with a solid metal chassis which goes all the way to the side bands, in between 2 pieces of glass panels.

The 6.2-inch display dominates the front panel with its 18.7:9 display ratio, and it’s packed with all the latest design elements – a notch on top and a small lip at the bottom. In the notch contains the usual earphone, 8-megapixel front-facing camera and a couple of sensors.

Towards the left of the device is where the removable tray, which contains a nanoSIM slot and a hybrid slot, which can either take a nanoSIM or microSD card. The right of the device is the conveniently located volume and power buttons. The rest of the ports are at the bottom, which includes the 3.5-mm headphone jack, USB-C port for charging and data transfer and a bottom-firing speaker.

The back glass has the typical ASUS aurora effect on it, and it all connects to the fingerprint reader in the middle. The pair of 12-megapixel and 8-megapixel sensors are to the top left, sitting on top of each other in their own housing, along with the two-tone dual-LED flash below it.
