Top Smartphones of 1H 2017

2017 has been a busy year for the mobile industry as smartphone manufacturers take turns to showcase their latest flagship devices. As we lead up the first half of 2017, we are thrilled to have witnessed new technologies like 18:9 display as well as 960 fps slow-mo video being introduced to the market.

If you are not aware of what are the latest flagship smartphones in the market now, let us walkthrough with you the top 10 smartphones that were announced in the first half of 2017.

LG G6 (Announced on February 2017)

LG’s flagship smartphone of 2017 was unveiled at the MWC 2017 in February. The LG G6 is the first smartphone to come with 18:9 aspect ratio instead of the regular 16:9 aspect ratio. The reason why they adopt the 18:9 format is because it offers more viewing space and a more immersive experience when streaming videos and playing games.

The G6 has once again adopted dual rear cameras setup with both using 13MP IMX258 image sensor — a standard one with f/1.8 main camera featuring optical stabilization plus a 71-degree field of view while the other wide angle lenses at 125 degrees with f/2.4 aperture. This allow the camera to deliver exceptional photoshooting experience by creating seamless transitions when zooming in and out between the wide-angle and standard camera lenses.

The LG G6 was sold in Malaysia since April.



Sony XZ Premium (Announced on February 2017)

Sony XZ Premium is the world’s first smartphone to pack with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 SoC. This device is also one of the few smartphones in the world that sports a 4K screen with HDR support.

The biggest selling point of Xperia XZ Premium is the super slow-mo camera. The camera has 19MP high resolution sensor, with 19% larger pixels to help you capture sharp, detailed images in low-light and backlit conditions. It has “memory stacked image sensor” capable of recording in HD at a rate of 960 frames per second, meaning you can create videos and play them back in super slow motion – four times slower than any other smartphones.

Sony XZ Premium was released in Malaysia on May.





Huawei P10 (Announced on February 2017)

Huawei P10 and P10 Plus were announced back in February at the MWC event held in Barcelona. The P10 series is the company’s second collaboration with Leica after the Huawei P9 lineup. Apart from the rear cameras, the P10 series also uses Leica lens on the front-facing camera for the first time.

Besides the upgrade of the photography segment, Huawei also partnered up with The Pantone Colour Institute to “feature the latest colour trends in Huawei’s product launches”. Hence, we are seeing refreshing color variants such as Pantone Greenery and Dazzling Blue on the P10 series.

Huawei P10 series debuted in Malaysia on March.

Samsung Galaxy S8 / S8+ (Announced on April 2017)

Samsung’s flagship of the year 2017, the Galaxy S8 duo have astounded the world with their infinity display featuring a bezel-less design with dual curve display which have high screen-to-body ratio.(~83.6% for S8 and ~84.0% for S8+)

Samsung’s own new intelligent assistant, Bixby was added to the Galaxy S8 lineup.It can learn what you like as you use the phone and try and refine its suggestions to help you based on your location and daily mobile habits and recent usage.

Samsung S8 and S8+ are now more productive with DeX because it can turn into a desktop PC with the phone dock.

The Galaxy S8 series is available in the local market on April.

HTC U11 (Announced on May 2017)

HTC’s flagship, HTC U11 went official in May with premium specs and features. The highlight of the device lies its pressure-sensitive frame called Edge Sense which is capable of detecting presses and squeezes, functionality will be limited out of the box, though continuous software support will allow users to further customize the new feature in the future.

With the 12 megapixel rear camera with 5-axis OIS + EIS for video, it achieve 90 marks for the DxOMark camera test, putting the Samsung Galaxy S8 and iPhone 7 Plus far behind. On the front, it offers a high-resolution 16 MP snapper that can record 1080p Full HD video, and comes with a Selfie Panorama mode.

The HTC U11 was released in Malaysia in June.



Xiaomi Mi 6 (Announced on April 2017)

Xiaomi’s 2017 flagship model — Mi 6 has debuted in China on April this year. Xiaomi devices always have high demand due to its high cost-performance value.The Mi 6 is retailed from CNY2499 (~RM1599) which is considered very cheap for its given specs that consist of Snapdragon 835, 6GB RAM and dual cameras for advance photography.

The rear cameras include two 12MP lens, where the main one sports a landscape (wide angle) lens and features 4-axis OIS, 1.25μm pixel size and f/1.8 aperture, while the secondary telephoto lens has 1.0 μm big pixels, 2X optical zoom (52mm equivalent focal length) and f/2.6 aperture. It allows the cameras to create SLR-like photos with a very shallow depth of field.

Xiaomi Mi 6 has yet to launch in Malaysia.


OnePlus 5 (Announced on June 2017)

OnePlus 5 was the latest flagship from OnePlus that offers top-notch specs at a competitive price. Apart from the luxury hardware, the main upgrade of the OnePlus 5 is seen on the photography department. For the first time in the company’s history, OnePlus 5 adopts dual camera construction that offers a 16MP EIS sensor with f/1.7 aperture, plus another 20MP telephoto lens.

Despite there are some similarities with the iPhone 7 Plus’s design language, but the OnePlus 5 is still capable to stand on its own with its fluid user experience and eye catching specs such as Snapdragon 835, 8GB RAM etc.

OnePlus 5 reached the local market in June.

Moto Z2 play (Announced on June 2017)

Moto Z2 Play is the second generation of Moto’s modular smartphone— Moto Z Play. It supports the Moto Mods which gives extra functionality to the device.

Although it is regarded as a midrange model, the Moto Z2 Play still offers considerable specs such as Full HD Super AMOLED screen, Snapdragon 626 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB of expandable storage and a 3,000 mAh size battery with fast charging support.

Moto Z2 Play major feature support Moto Mods. In addition of last year’s Hasselblad True Zoom camera, JBL SoundBoost and other plug-in accessories, Moto also published a variety of new Moto Mods module accessories.

Moto Z2 Play had just been launched in the Malaysian market in July.



OPPO R11 (Announced on June 2017)

OPPO R11 was introduced just last month in China. The R11 series is the first OPPO smartphone to sport dual camera setup. The dual-lens camera on the back offers 20MP and 16MP sensors plus a 20MP f/2.0 front selfie camera for amazing high-quality selfies.

R11 adopts Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 mobile platform that is powered by the 14-bit premium Spectra 160 ISP image processing technology that will bring enhanced clarity to every shot.

OPPO R11 series has yet to make its official introduction in Malaysia. But the R11 was recently spotted in our SIRIM database, so we reckoned it won’t be soon before long to enter our local market.



nubia z17 (Announced on June 2017)

Nubia Z17 is the world’s first smartphone that is running Snapdragon 835 with 8GB RAM! Besides offering commendable specs, the Z17 also has a classy design with bezelless screen on the front.

The highlight of the Z17 lies on its dual camera. It features a 23 MP and 12 MP combo with the primary camera system offers 2x optical zoom and up to 10x dynamic zoom which is similar to the iPhone 7 Plus.

Additionally, it comes with Dolby Atmos speaker as well as IP67 certification for dust and water resistance that can withstand 1 meter of water.

Nubia Malaysia has announced that the Z17 will be released in Malaysia next month with the retail price to be revealed later.
